Professor Mafalda Ferreira, the study's mentor and spokesperson, emerged as a central figure in the interviews and reports.

The 15th edition of the 'Christmas Shopping' study, carried out by IPAM, which analyzes the habits of the Portuguese during the end-of-year festive season, was highlighted by several Portuguese media outlets, including the largest national television stations, namely RTP, Sic, TVI and Porto Canal.

Professor Mafalda Ferreira, the study's mentor and spokesperson, emerged as a central figure in the interviews and reports, presenting the results and insights obtained during the research.

The study, which IPAM has been focusing on every year, concluded that the Portuguese planned to spend an average of €356 on Christmas shopping, a figure that reflects a 5.5% decrease on the previous year (€377). Economic instability has a clear impact on consumer behavior with 60% saying they would spend less than last year, while 27% estimated they would spend the same.

Conducted between November 26 and December 11, 2023 in mainland Portugal, the IPAM study shows significant fluctuations since 2021 when the Portuguese estimated they would spend €398, the second highest figure since the study began in 2009. In 2022 there was a forecast decrease (down 5.2% on 2021), reinforced in 2023 (down 5.5% on 2022).
